I've noticed a definite boost in both the power and efficiency, in a relatively brief time, of my students' and my own strikes since implementing a lot of the drills into my practice and teaching.

I'd greatly encourage the "Punch!" electronic book to anybody who is seriously intrigued in improving their striking skills rapidly and efficiently or that of their students.

"Martial Artists Admit Fear that Their Punches Will not Stop arge Attacker"

Article by
Keith Pascal

Can you guess the top four questions created in about punching?

I'm the senior editor of one of the longest-running martial-arts ezines on the Net. Letters pour in on a weekly basis with questions and requests from martial artists representing a lot styles (JKD, Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Kung Fu styles, and Boxing, to name several).

These readers ask questions relating to each aspect of martial arts, even though the focus of the newsletter is on practical martial arts. The newsletter, Martial Arts Mastery, discusses self defense that'll save somebody's life against the strongest or the majority of skilled attackers. MAM avoids competition topics for example point scoring or katas and music.

Several years ago, I began receiving more and more emails requesting advice on punching.

Prior to I let you know the four the majority of asked for topics, I would like to make a tiny request. Take a piece of paper; a scrap will do. Or open a text file on the pc.

In a minute, you will scribble several words about what would scare you in an attack...

Immediately, take a second or 2 and think about and envision being attacked. Still whether you regularly fantasize your nearly superhuman skills defeated the worst attacker, this time, it is a losing battle.

For the sake of this exercise, your mental picture has an awful ending. Can you visualize being overcome in an attack?

What is happening in the fight? What are you afraid your attacker might do? What do you fear you will not gain the ability to do.

Immediately, for the purpose of this article, let's get even more specific while picturing this scary scene:

In your mental movie, picture that your punches are not doing what is needed.

Do you've your paper ready (or document open)?

In only a few words, jot down what imagined problem you are having using your punches. What is your fear or your doubt in your martial ability?

How come your punches are not working in your visualized scene?

Be honest. Nobody has to see your note except you. Be frank with yourself.

Take the time to actually write down or type your response, for the reason that it is certain to keep you honest with yourself.

Truly. Complete this small request, for your benefit. Make a note of ... any doubts you've about your punching ability.

Go ahead. I will wait.

A number of Individuals Panic at the Thought of One of These

Did you take the time to record your answer on paper or in a text file?

I hope so, for your benefit. (I will explain why a little later.)

Immediately, place your note aside for a just minutes. We will get back to it a little later.

Let's move on.

These were the main topics from the letters I obtained begging for punch assist:

* The subscribers feared that their punches would not have stopping power against a giant, muscular bad guy.

* A lot wished to know how to create their punches faster. They cringed at the thought that other martial artists could out-punch them on speed alone.

* A number of martial artists said that they did not know how to create their punches practical. For example, they had a feeling in the pits of their tummies that they would not know the way to get past a well-defended guard position.

* And last, however not least, a lot practitioners wrote expressing their panic at the thought of needing to punch their way through multiple attackers. (Can you visualize being tackled to the ground by a gang of thugs?)

You do not need to review your note yet, however ...

Do any of those topics describe your concerns using your punching ability?

Are you afraid of multiple attackers?

Not being able to drop a muscle-bound hulk?

Do you worry about not being fast enough or lacking effective punches?

Multiple attackers and fighting effectively are categories that extend beyond punching. Those are big topics. We might need to include discussions of kicking, strategy, weapons, grappling, rear attacks, etc.

On the other hand, having above-average amounts of speed and power are 2 potential techniques to solve both difficulties. Consider it.

If you had a power punch that could truly drop somebody straight to the ground with one blow, then fighting multiple attackers would be most easier. Picture this:

One hit -- down.

Turn to the following attacker. Another hit -- BAM -- down.

On to the following.

Even the possibility of three tried to rush you -- Bam, bam, bam.
Three hits -- three attackers down.

Having knockdown punches is a partial solution to multiple attackers. And having a outstandingly quick punch solves and difficulties about effectiveness and being able to punch your target. If you were that fast, you may well, pardon the pun, always beat them to the punch.

With a little assist, these readers could develop a lot lot more powefrul and much quickly punches -- powerful enough to carry out the job in an emergency.

So a lot of them wished to know how much punch power is enough...

Breaking Boards
Does not Mean a Thing

Do you realize that many schools spend a significant amount of time breaking boards?

At one time, I believed that being able to break boards equated to having a power punch. After all, if you may well do damage to a piece of wood ... (hmmm.)

I once would be afraid that a number of board-breaking martial artist would one day split open my chest, or crack a number of ribs, with a successful hit. I truly did not desire be on the receiving end of one of those punches.

Guess what. One day, it happened. I got hit ... square in the chest with a solid punch, by somebody who could break board after board.

I got hit.

And it was not as bad as I had imagined. Sure, it hurt, however ...

I survived. No broken bones. No wind knocked out of me. The punch did not end the sparring session.

Yes, being hit caused pain. It hurt most -- left a bruise. However it definitely was not devastating. As I said, It allowed me to continue sparring.

If you are martial artist, you know you get hit every one of the time during practice. It the nature of great teaching. A number of those hits are hard, however you survive. Over time, you discover how to pick yourself up and continue.

I think back to that first slam in the chest, and immediately I chuckle. Yes, after awhile, you get used to an occasional hit while teaching.

A number of Eventually Figure Out Practical Punching; Others Do not Being able to break a board with a punch is a method. It does not necessarily equate to power hits. A number of board breakers have good punches. Others do not.

At first, I figured that those who wanted to boost their punches were studying martial arts on their own, out of their own homes.

It made sense that individuals taking martial arts and finding out how to snap boards in half would be confident in their punching ability, even the possibility of they could not put their skills to use in a true street fight.

I was wrong. An equal number of martial artists who were formally studying wrote about doubts in their abilities:

"...he offered to allow me
punch him in the stomach."

"... been studying for four years. I'm able to break three boards consistently with both a reverse punch and a ridge-hand strike.

"Last weekend, I was with a group of friends. This one guy, a buddy of a buddy, challenged my martial arts ability.

"Normally, I would not have accepted the challenge, however he offered to allow me punch him in the stomach. It was a dare. So, I figured I would teach this guy a little lesson.

"I punched him, only a little too hard, I thought. Remember, I break boards with my punch.

"So, I punched him, and I knew that I had punched him hard. And ......... not a thing! I did not even knock him back. If I caused any pain, he did not show it.

"Keith, can you assist me?

Immediately, I feel like calling it quits after four years. I am bummed.

Do you've any advice? Please!

-- Chris W., Phoenix, Arizona.

Do not worry. I helped Chris and a bunch of other martial artists ... boxers, too.

Articles boost Punching

I began writing articles for subscribers to MAM, the free martial-arts ezine. The readers began with an editorial on punching harder -- several revelations never shared in print prior to.. From there, they sunk their teeth into several editorials and reports on punching faster.

The readers discovered how to create their hits more efficient and ultimately, more powerful.

These first articles helped create a solid foundation. I sought to do my greatest to assist my readers, however did not desire this detailed material obtainable to the masses. You had to become a subscriber to study the articles. And they had to obey the copyright notice. No posting them on-line for all to see.

In the 1st round of articles, subscribers read:

"Three imperative principles to consider when perfecting your punch." This was good advice for a beginner -- a great review for the seasoned martial artist or boxer.

They also learned to "Develop Devastating Power Punches" with a minimal number of practice sessions. (I even now get e-mail complimenting the article and the way it produces such quick results.)

Once my readers learned this super power punch, they worked on generating that type of power with different targets and from short distances. (Ever hear of Bruce Lee's one-inch punch?)

Make Minor Adjustments to Boost Power

After awhile, I went back to other subjects. I stopped writing about punching. MAM ran a variety of articles about weapons, grappling, and kicking.

However the requests for extra punching articles kept pouring in.

I at last gave the subscribers, and my clients, what they desired:

Another collection of articles poured forth, showing them how to create only a few minor adjustments to their bodies and punch positions to truly crank up the power.

I myself am not a blocker, however taught those who do block an efficiency-building method to combine with their punching strategy.

More to my taste was explaining to all the way to utilize thier punching hands to feel for the openings. (You are able to react a lot lot more quickly if you let your hand to feel the opening.)

These subscribers showed their appreciation. So, more practical techniques were sent to them, including:

Articles on the way to beat grapplers at their own game. Interrupt the flow of the fight to truly confuse a grappler attempting to take you to the ground.

All about vertical punches. For people who cannot rotate their punch horizontally in time, these gung fu (kung fu) punches are the solution.

What steps to take when a method is not working. This is advice of the way to get out of an awful situation with a single, specific punch.

The way to punch with no making use of your fist. All about arm pops -- that jarr your attacker.

Complete guidelines the way to never flinch at a punch again -- I used this method when I was a beginner. In my opinion, you will never survive in a true fight if you fail to have this skill -- especially if you're a boxer or a martial artist. Does the sharp pound of a hammer make your eyes blink? If so, this drill is an absolute necessity for you.

(At my subscribers' request, they read a follow-up report that generalized the flinch elimination to include all panic responses. Can you visualize eliminating every single one of your panic reactions one by one?)

As They Acquired Better Punches, They Desired More Techniques, Tactics, and Methods

Martial Arts Mastery needed to move on to other topics. I sought to talk about tactics needed for effective counters.

A number of subscribers were requesting scenario teaching. And since I had written the guide Wrist Locks, I sought to teach about wrist locks, joint locks, and arm bars.

We needed to move on. Yet, the requests still 'trickled' in.

I made a decision to take my greatest punching editorials and combine them with new articles, that had not yet been published. I arranged them, edited , and rounded out the techniques.

Then I reread the collection of punch articles, reports, and chapters.

There was something missing.

Actually, there were FIVE somethings missing. I added five very necessary chapters.

I cleaned it all up, put everything together, and finished up with a downloadable guide book of over 160 pages, containing over 50 chapters/articles all on improving one's punches.

Do You Even Now Have Your Note

If you jotted down your potential punching problem earlier, immediately's the time to refer to it. Either call it up on part of your pc screen, or take out your slip of paper.

Reread your note, and think of your fear.

If you may well do every one of the methods mentioned so far in this article -- from developing brute-stopping power to feeling for openings while speed punching, would your imagined attacker still gain the ability to overcome you?

I desire your honest opinion. I need you to study the remainder of this special document using your note in mind. When you've finished, ask yourself how much of your fear would be eliminated if you were able to defend yourself with every one of the benefits mentioned in this article.

"The More Complete Your Punching Expertise and Ability, The Better Able You're to Defend Yourself with Complete Self-belief" I've been teaching martial arts since 1982, practically my whole adult life.

Over time, student after student have developed self-belief as they acquired martial competence.

Naturally, they practiced kicking, timing, distance, strategy, the 5 Ways of Attack, and plenty more.

And they learned to punch.

These students learned to seek out martial arts info from a lot sources. Immediately that I publish, nearly all of them have read and practiced the advice on punching found in the 50+ chapters.

And most certainly, over 1,000 martial artists from over the globe immediately practice the tips and tactics from this guide, including:

Analyzing a fight. It's a new paradigm for defense -- one way to see a fight. It can only adust the way you punch -- forever.

A Kickboxer tactic for getting in. More essential, you learn the way to end the kickboxer tactic from being snapped on you. Utilize this punch tactic, prior to they get their attack under way.

Eight techniques to develop a super back fist. (Over 70% of practitioners polled thought of this as their favorite hit.)

These back fist modifications. The famous martial arts writer Loren Christensen gives us his 2 cents' worth on this effective method.

One of everybody's favorite topics in the electronic book was:

Get your punch in each time -- easy direct advice. A number of spend years hunting for this basic truth. Save yourself time and read this article. Advanced practitioners nod their heads in approval.

Other Popular Punch Discussions Included:

A 'mental exercise' that'll assist you enhance only about any method. Sometimes the way we consider a technque's flaws turns it into a much stronger move.

A distance fake that's so successful, I hesitated putting it In our guide. I discovered it while talking to 2 original Bruce Lee students. It's a perfect method for your practice workouts.

Several chapters after that, you get a practice tip that truly is a bargin at this price of the guide. It's subtle, however oh so successful. You are able to incorporate it into each practice session. You will not believe it until you have a go for awhile. Then you will never practice any other way.

An important piece of advice for teaching to take a straight blast -- a barrage of punches. If you feel that taking one punch is likely, however defending against a flury of punches is not, then you could do with to take a good look at this article.

Another straight blast defense method. I would like to make certain you do not panic when the punches fly.

"Golden Gloves Boxer Immediately Uses This Tactic"

When I was a high-school teacher on the Oregon Coast, I taught martial arts privately to a golden-gloves boxer.

Sometimes, he'd get frustrated that he could not locate an opening. (I was no dummy ... was not about to let a skilled boxer punch me through a hole in my defense.)

So, I showed him a tip that he found immensely practical. Actually, he began utilizing it each time he could not locate an opening.

I turned the tip into a report, and filed it away for future use.

It's included in the electronic book, "The Punch Papers."
